Grand Bahama Island with main town Freeport and capital West End is the best known island in the Bahamas, found at only 60 miles from Florida. Scuba divers are treated with stunning shipwrecks, one of the world's largest underwater cave systems and a wide variety of marine and coral life. An hyperbaric chamber, a vivid artificial reef plan and a well protected mooring program add up to the already superb popularity of the Bahamas as one of the worlds best scuba destinations. One of the more popular wreck dives is the 230 feet long Theo's Wreck, starting as a Norwegian cargo vessel called the M/S Logna in 1954 until it was scuttled in 1981 serving its last years as a cement cargo transporter. Another huge wreck is the Sea Star, an Italian freighter split amid ship in 2002 because of hurricane Frances. And divers should not leave out a dive on Shark Alley where chances of spotting reefsharks are huge.

One of the reasons to visit the Bahamas is its pristine beaches and fantastic underwater world, but one should not forget its lush vegetation and its many scenic bays. You can visit Lucayan villages, the Vegas style Treasure Bay Casino or stroll for souvenirs on one of its famous straw markets. The Garden of the Groves (dedicated to Wallace Groves) offers cascading waterfalls, flora and fauna from all across the globe, the Grand Bahama Labyrinth and a replica of its former chapel. One of its best beaches is called Gold Rock Beach, protected within Lucayan National Park and the best place to see its mangrove ecosystem. Within the park you will also find the Lucayan Caverns, miles of tunnels, caverns and caves of which much is available to divers. Other highlights include the Perfume Factory, Sanctuary Bay with its many dolphins and Peterson Cay National Park. Grand Bahama Island is a great place for a (dive) holiday.
